Family and Relationships
What do family and relationships mean for your kid?
Family is a fundamental support system for many kids. This can include their parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and family friends. Sometimes, a kid might have a conflict with a loved one, or could be experiencing the effects of divorce or being distanced from a loved one. For caregivers, it's important to help a kid identify who they might be having conflict with, and help them to build the foundations of conflict resolution.
Actions to start a conversation
Start by noting that your kid seems to be struggling with handling changing relationships within the family. Ask them how they're feeling and if there's something the other person is doing that is upsetting them.
Actions to do while listening
Don't disagree with your kid's perception. Try not to defend the other family member or minimize your kid's concern. Express gratitude that your kid has shared what they're feeling.
Actions to understand
Ask your kid if something in particular happened that made things especially challenging with the family member. Ask what they wish the other person would do differently. It can also be helpful to ask them what they think the other person would say about the conflict.
